When restricted to just three words, D’Laveance Bert-Sims described himself as a Flamboyant Black Cyclist. In an era of armchair activism and a starkly generational lack of follow-through, he is a shining example of someone who goes against the grain. By collaborating with Paradise Garage, Central Ohio Transit Authority, and Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, D’laveance is working towards tangible and much-needed change for all those who call the capital city home. Forgetting about the privilege of car ownership is easy when you are the one behind the wheel, but public transportation is a reality for a forgotten portion of the population. It’s a rare thing to hear about a 17-year old working in tandem with a member of congress to create real change in places that have real needs. For D’Laveance, it’s just another day.
