Artist Spotlight: Logan St. Hilaire

What does community mean to you as an artist?

“I’m not sure where I would be without community. There are times when I don’t believe in myself, but my friends and family do.

Community itself is incredibly inspiring too. When I look at my favorite artists, musicians, or creatives, they’ve built a tight-knit system of support and expression. I want to continue to build that for myself and others. That is everything to me.

I admire the community of my close collaborator Saint Claire, another Columbus creative. He brought me in and showed me what a creative family is. Showing me the ropes with different circles and truly how to navigate, I wouldn’t be here without him.

My friend Josh pushes me a lot. He’s always honest and tells me when my work doesn’t feel inspired or at the level he expects from me. I love that, and it makes me think more. I want to put out something that feels different; never something that just falls into the heap of mediocrity.

I have really close friends that I talk to about everything. Charles, Maddy, Kai, Kae, and my girlfriend are a few out of the many. In university and the creative sphere, things move so quickly, it’s a necessity to have “constants” like them.

My inspirations are really diverse. I love a lot of films. Dressed to Kill, Lost in Translation, Three Colors: Red to name a few. With digital video and film being my most comfortable medium I try to soak up everything I can. Directors like Spike Jonze, Sofia Coppola, and Brian De Palma are my favorites to admire. Walker Andrews, my favorite music video director sends me down a rabbit hole of study every time I watch something of his.

Music is special. My taste can get really niche but I also stay pretty grounded in underground rap. Lucki, Tana, Dom Corleo. I also like “old rap” like Future and Young Thug. The music that really helps… rock, indie, and folk. Artists like Florence Welch, My Bloody Valentine, Slow Pulp, and The Forthwanders especially. Fewer lyrics, more sounds.

Maybe I just like these things, but I really hope it shows in my work. I want people to feel something when they see my work whether it be a photograph, a video, or a mixed-media collage.”
